Derek Hay established the business in 1972 behind the George Canning pub in Camberwell in a workshop. He was previously at S G Smiths Motors at Dulwich Village, and when they decided to change from Rover to Volvo, Dell started the business. Eventually, he moved to the current premises in February 1996: it was then called William Spicer, but after refurbishment the name was changed to Dell Autos. Steve Zammit used to do Dell's MOTs for him, then joined up with Dell. In 2004, Dell decided to take a back seat and sold the business to Steve, but Derek stayed on as the receptionist.
